The Youth Day of Russian Energy Week is the leading platform for liaison between young professionals and industry leaders. The growing number of participants in the IT Championship speaks to the transformation of traditional professions. Thanks to technological advancements, the industry is increasingly employing hybrid engineers – multifunctional IT professionals who are highly proficient in the oil and gas business. This is yet another proof that in addition to artificial intelligence the production sector needs skilled professionals who know how to work with AI.

Over the past four years, representatives of 20 regions, 66 companies, and 40 leading educational institutions across the country have joined our project. Many of these young professionals came to work at Gazprom Neft to develop new technologies for the industry. The number of specialists with digital competencies has already exceeded 10,000 people, which is almost ten percent of the company’s total manpower.

This is an interesting venue, and such a superb final round. The solutions prove that the case is truly relevant. You may see this sort of tasks in the automation industry, in automated process control systems, which means this is a common issue when searching for new solutions for synchronous equipment, software, and complex IT systems. By participating in the Championship, we have gained valuable experience that we can later use in our operations and to improve our skills in the future. The product created by the team was also mostly intended for use at a real-life facility in the oil industry to help the operating personnel manage the process with ease. It employed trends and configuration parameters. We suggest future participants not to settle for the existing solutions, but to extensively use imagination and ideas that can be utilised to create new projects. Do not fear limitations: you can always find a solution that will make you the winner.

This is our first time in this championship. And it makes a very good impression. Our last week of preparations was pretty emotional. In fact, we were working things out in real time, on the go. I guess the main secret of our victory is the cross-functional nature of skills of our team members. In other words, a good project needs skilled drilling professionals, as in this case, and equally competent IT developers. And when you achieve this synergy, you can deliver a top-notch product. This is exactly what we did. A large number of participants creates positive competition and thereby stimulates new actions and decisions. In fact, it spurs action in general. We wish all future participants perseverance, and be sure to take part in the Championship!

The final round of the Oil Industry IT Championship held as part of the Youth Day of the Russian Energy Week is beyond doubt a high-profile event that demonstrates the importance of the problem at hand and helps you come into the spotlight in the industry and get feedback from the top experts. We are very happy with our success and certainly proud to have become the winners! We were truly committed to solving the case and kept a strong focus on operational cadence, which enabled us to swiftly deliver an excellent solution that was highly praised by the experts.

Requirements for the case solution become more stringent with each new season, so you need to be more professional in your approach to solution development if you want to succeed. Do not be afraid to try and go all the way, even when nothing works out.

The Oil Industry IT Championship has brought together talented participants and seasoned experts. Even though it was held for the first time, the teams were able to demonstrate good results in solving the case, both at the hackathon and when defending their MVPs. The developed IT solutions have an ample potential: they meet the needs of the business and can be used to replace their foreign equivalents. Participation in the IT Championship gave us a chance to explore new products and technologies. This is a new rewarding experience. During the competition, we improved our self-organisation and teamwork skills and quickly got an in-depth experience with technologies that we are only considering to employ in the future. No matter the challenges ahead of us, falling back or giving up should not be an option!

The championship brought together lots of interesting people! The main theme of the event calls for a multi-discipline approach. Through the example of ensuring continuity of drilling processes, we saw how a wide range of professionals work side by side in pursuit of a common a goal. New technologies should harmoniously augment the performance of employees. The COVID pandemic has shown how standard business processes involving people, such as data transfer and processing, are transforming. This is the experience we have encountered at Salym Petroleum over the past two years. That is why being ready for failures of IT systems and acting flexibly and consistently is very important. We were able to see all this during the championship.

The IT Championship is a perfect platform to showcase your company, a place for cutting-edge technologies and true professionals. And the competition was a good testing ground for our cross-functional team and each of its members. The project helped us take a fresh breath and boost our motivation and knowledge. You should try to enjoy the process, because solving the case is a chance to step away from your daily routine and to try your hand at a new task and field in a team of like-minded fellows.

It was incredible. We were judged by distinguished subject matter experts. We were having some jitters, but we knew exactly what to do in any given situation. There was no fear, and here we are. During the championship, we tried to come up with a solution that would address the technology challenges of the case and could be put into practice. We will certainly keep getting better and improving our knowledge and skills in gaining new real-life experience to handle similar problems.
